Breaking: ECOWAS Court Declares Twitter Ban Illegal And Unlawful | Daily Report Nigeria

The ECOWAS Court of Justice on Thursday, July 14, declared illegal and unlawful the ban on Twitter by the Federal Government last year.Recall that the Federal Government on June 5th 2021 banned the operation of the microblogging platform in Nigeria after it deleted a controversial tweet from President Buhari. The ban lasted through to 13th January 2022 before with the FG threats to arrest and prosecute anyone using Twitter in the country. The Court, however, ruled today that the suspension of twitter by the Nigerian government was unlawful and inconsistent with the provisions of Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights both of which Nigeria is a state party.
The Court also ordered the Buhari’s regime to take necessary steps to align its policies and other measures to give effect to rights and freedoms and to guarantee a non-repetition of the unlawful ban of Twitter.More details later….
