BREAKING: FG Releases Funds to Settle NASU Salaries, Retiree Benefits

Breaking News | Daily Report Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced the release of funds to clear outstanding salaries owed to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) at Federal Universities, as well as benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.

This development was confirmed by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

According to the statement, payments to NASU members have already commenced, with many reporting receipt of their overdue salaries.

The statement read, “The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities… payments have commenced and many have confirmed receipt.”

This action follows an indefinite strike initiated by the Joint Action Committee of NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) due to the non-payment of salaries for the past four months, which has severely disrupted university operations across the country.

In previous discussions, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, National President of SSANU, highlighted that university officials, including vice-chancellors and registrars, had also not been paid.

The unions have insisted that university activities would remain suspended until all outstanding payments are addressed.

Earlier this week, the Federal Government, represented by the outgoing Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, urged the unions to call off their strike, assuring them that measures were being put in place to resolve the issues that led to the work stoppage.
