The government expressed disappointment over what it described as ASUU’s lack of cooperation, noting that continuous dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve disputes.

The statement highlighted that the welfare of university staff and the stability of the academic calendar remain a priority under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“The government continues to demonstrate goodwill and flexibility, but it will not abdicate its responsibility to uphold fairness and accountability in the use of public resources,” the statement read.

Ministers appealed to all academic unions to prioritise partnership and dialogue rather than confrontation, stressing the importance of maintaining industrial harmony and educational stability.

ASUU, however, announced a total warning strike beginning Monday, October 13, 2025, to press home several demands.

These include: conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, release of three and a half months of withheld salaries, sustainable funding for public universities, and an end to alleged victimisation of lecturers at LASU, Prince Abubakar Audu University, and FUTO.

Other demands cover salary and promotion arrears spanning four years, as well as release of withheld third-party deductions, including cooperative contributions and union dues.
