A petrol station has been razed to dust following the explosion of a tanker in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Daily Report Nigeria learnt the incident occurred on Sunday evening near Boromeo Roundabout.
According to a witness who spoke to newsmen, a tanker ladened with petrol bursted into flames while awaiting for the content to be discharged.
A heavy traffic along the ever busy Awka Road is said to have delayed firefighters from arriving the scene on time, but battled to contain the raging inferno upon arrival.
The Anambra Police Command Spokesman, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, confirming the incident, said police personnel attached to the Inland Town Divisional Headquarters, Onitsha, were deployed to the scene to prevent criminals from taking advantage of the incident to steal.
Ikenga further said the truck bursted into flames right inside the filling station while waiting for its content to be offloaded.
While the spokesman could not ascertain the level of damage caused by the fire, at least 15 vehicles and houses were caught by the inferno.
