  • One Customs officer was shot and killed before the attackers set the camp ablaze.
  • Residents said the gunmen arrived in large numbers and fired indiscriminately.
  • Sheikh Ahmad Gumi again defended the bandits, claiming they act out of “revenge.”

Armed terrorists suspected to be members of the Lakurawa group invaded a Nigeria Customs Service base in Maje, a community in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The attackers reportedly arrived in large numbers late at night and immediately opened fire on the officers stationed at the camp.

According to residents, the terrorists shot sporadically and moved with military-style confidence while advancing toward the facility. One Customs officer was killed instantly, and the camp was later set on fire by the attackers. Villagers fled into nearby bushes to save their lives.

“They came fully armed and started shooting. Everyone scattered. Nobody could stay to watch what was happening,” a resident told reporters.

As of the time of this report, neither the Kebbi State Government nor the Nigeria Customs Service has released an official statement on the attack or confirmed whether there were additional casualties.

Meanwhile, in a separate development related to insecurity in northern Nigeria, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi once again defended bandits operating in the region. During an interview on Trust TV, he claimed that many of these armed groups are acting out of revenge due to past grievances.

Gumi insisted that Fulani herdsmen and bandit groups “do not attack without cause,” arguing that many of them claim to have lost family members in previous clashes. Although he admitted that killing innocent people is “wrong and unacceptable,” he maintained that their actions are driven by retaliation rather than senseless violence.

He encouraged the Federal Government to negotiate with the groups rather than launch military operations against them, stating that dialogue could lead to peace and reintegration.

The attack in Kebbi adds to the growing list of violent incidents linked to armed groups operating across northern Nigeria, further intensifying calls for effective security strategies and accountability.
