Dozens of occupants of a two-story building have been feared dead after its collapse on Wednesday night.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the building situated along Lagos Street in Garki, Abuja collapsed around 11 pm.

The collapse of the building left an a yet to be ascertained number of occupants trapped or dead.

According to an eyewitness, the building housed many apartments including shops and offices.

According to him, “There was wailing all over the place after the building collapsed. Dozens of people are either dead or trapped as the building is fully occupied.

“It was a scene of helplessness with people screaming and going helter-skelter, while the heavy rain continues,” he added.

However, Director-General of Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, Dr. Abbass Iddriss who confirmed the incident, said 37 people have been rescued at the scene of the collapsed building out of which two are fatally injured.

Dr. Iddriss said the affected persons have been evacuated to various hospitals for medical treatment.

He said “37 persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped.

“Rescue team and others are on ground. Rescue operations on but slowly due to ongoing rain.

“They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble”.

He revealed that rescue mission continues while they await the arrival of equipment to enhance the operations.
