Nigeria was plunged into darkness once again on Thursday after the country’s national power grid collapsed for the second time in just four days.

The blackout, which occurred at approximately 11:20 AM, left millions of Nigerians without electricity, exacerbating ongoing concerns about the fragility of the national grid.

In a brief statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Nigeria National Grid confirmed the setback, stating: “BREAKING: Another Grid Setback Experienced.”

This latest collapse marks the twelfth grid failure in the past eleven months, highlighting the persistent instability plaguing the country’s power infrastructure.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), responsible for managing the national grid, has yet to release an official explanation for the incident.

However, on Tuesday, the TCN attributed the previous grid collapse to the failure of power lines and generator trips, a recurring issue that has raised questions about the reliability of the grid’s maintenance systems.

Despite the grid’s failure, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had just received an investigative report on the cause of the frequent blackouts the day before.

Although the details of the report remain under wraps, the report’s timing suggests heightened governmental interest in addressing the systemic challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector.

The repeated grid collapses have sparked an outcry on social media, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the continued power shortages.

Some have called for urgent reforms in the energy sector, while others are questioning the government’s ability to solve the country’s ongoing electricity crisis.
