Data released by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that as of 11:00 a.m., electricity load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) had fallen to zero megawatts.

The sudden drop indicates a complete system failure, leaving millions of Nigerians without power. Many residents reported outages shortly after dawn, while businesses and hospitals were forced to rely on generators.

An industry source familiar with grid operations described the incident as “a total shutdown of the national transmission system,” noting that restoration efforts were ongoing.

“When load allocation drops to zero across all DisCos, it means the grid is completely down,” the source said.

Nigeria has experienced several grid collapses in recent years, raising concerns about the stability of the country’s electricity infrastructure and the need for urgent reforms in the power sector.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to provide a clear timeline for full power restoration.
