The Niger junta led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani has said it will hand over to civilian rule.
According to General Tchiani, the army will hand over power to civilian a government within the next three years.
The Niger junta leader made declaration during a televised broadcast on Saturday night.
Tchiani gave the broadcast meeting with a delegation of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) led by the former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar(rtd).

General Tchiani revealed that the junta will institute a committee to study and create a new constitution of the country within a month.

The coup leader however, maintained that Niger does not want to go to war, but will defend itself if the need arises.
Tchiani said “Our ambition is not to confiscate power,” and added: “If an attack were to be undertaken against us, it will not be the walk in the park some people seem to think.”
He further added that the door for negotiation was still open.
