Omobayo Godwins has assumed the position of Deputy Governor of Edo State after the impeachment of Philip Shaibu.

The impeachment followed an investigation by a panel chaired by Justice S A Omonuwa (retd), which concluded its proceedings on Friday and submitted its report to the State Assembly.

On Monday, the Assembly deliberated on the report and proceeded with the impeachment of Shaibu.

Despite his absence, Shaibu had argued that the case was pending in an Abuja court.

Governor Obaseki promptly nominated Godwins, whose appointment received approval from the State Assembly.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa, the Chief Judge of Edo State.

Notably, the new deputy governor previously contested the Federal House of Representatives seat for Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency under the banner of the Labour Party during the 2023 elections.

Stay tuned for more details…
