The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Governor of Adamawa State.
In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel of the apex court dismissed the appeal by Aishatu Ahmed Dahiru, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last governorship election in the state.
Justice John Okoro, who presided over the panel, held that the declaration of Dahiru as the winner of the election by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) was unlawful and a nullity.
Okoro further held that it was the Returning Officer of any election that is empowered by the Electoral Act to announce the results of an election and that any other person who assumes that role acts illegally.
