Gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) launched a violent assault on three communities in Imo State on Friday morning, killing no fewer than seven residents and leaving several others with critical injuries.
The affected areas — Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno — all located in Arondizuogu and Ideato North local government areas, were reportedly attacked in quick succession, throwing the entire region into panic.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State Command, DSP Henry Okoye, issued a statement describing the assault as “senseless” and “barbaric.”

He said:“The senseless assault, which claimed the lives of over seven persons and left several others critically injured, was described by the CP as barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable.”
According to him, Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has already mobilised tactical and intelligence teams to pursue the attackers and restore calm.
“The Commissioner led a tactical unit in an intense combing operation of the affected communities. He affirmed that the situation is now under control, and proactive measures have been taken to forestall further attacks,” the statement added.

Authorities say efforts are underway to apprehend the gunmen, and urged locals to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies.
So far, there has been no official claim of responsibility, but security sources believe the attack fits the pattern of recent violence linked to IPOB militants and its armed wing, ESN.
The Imo State Command assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and urged residents to volunteer credible information to aid investigations.
