President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed the death of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, who passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 56.
The tragic news was shared by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement released early Wednesday morning.
General Lagbaja’s death followed a period of illness, and he passed away in Lagos. His sudden passing has deeply shocked the nation, particularly the military community, where he was widely respected for his leadership and commitment.

Born on February 28, 1968, in Nigeria, Lt. General Lagbaja had a distinguished military career. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. His journey in the Nigerian Army began when he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course, and quickly rose through the ranks.
Throughout his career, Lagbaja held key positions, including platoon commander at the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, and played crucial roles in multiple internal security operations. These included Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States. His military acumen and leadership were vital in the nation’s efforts to combat insurgency and internal security threats.
Lagbaja was also an alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, further demonstrating his commitment to enhancing his professional capabilities.

He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
In his statement, President Tinubu expressed profound condolences to the late general’s family, the Nigerian Army, and the nation at large. “General Lagbaja served with unmatched dedication and courage. His contributions to our country’s security will never be forgotten,” Tinubu said, as he wished the late Army chief eternal peace.
