Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant in Media and Publicity to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday claimed that his principal is under pressure to change the Nigerian Constitution.
The presidential aide while speaking on Channels TV said
the persuaders are pressuring him to run for a third term in office.
“In fact, from 2019, we have seen persuaders come before our very eyes and tell us that leaders should not go; that term limits are a nuisance and should be eliminated,” he said.

Shehu, however, did not reveal the identity of the persons behind the call and if the president has the support in the National Assembly to push for another term in office.
Speaking on the call for another term, Shehu said President Buhari is eager to leave office in 2023.
He said,
“But Buhari wants to make the point that ‘I am not here to stay a day beyond my term of office and be sure there’ll be an election.”
Shehu pointed out that there have been cases in government where leaders choose to remain for third terms despite their shortcomings.
“We have seen people on death beds unwilling to go, and persuaders are saying ‘no, they will keep power until they go to the grave,” the presidential spokesman said.
