Defections, factional disputes threaten APC cohesion nationwide
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has activated its Committee on Strategy, Conflict Resolution and Mobilisation to address escalating internal disputes across 11 states, as the ruling party intensifies efforts to stabilise its structure ahead of the 2027 general election.
President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the committee in late 2025 to proactively manage conflicts, deepen internal cohesion and forestall crises that could weaken the party’s electoral prospects. According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the panel comprises APC governors, Federal Executive Council members and other senior party stakeholders.

The committee is chaired by Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, with former APC National Legal Adviser, Muiz Banire, serving as member/secretary. Other members include Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), alongside several ministers and party chieftains.
The task before the panel is extensive, as the APC grapples with leadership tussles, factional divisions and post-defection tensions in states where it is either in government or opposition. In Akwa Ibom, long-standing party members have accused defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Governor Umo Eno, of attempting to hijack APC structures ahead of 2027.
In Anambra, unresolved fallout from the party’s 2025 governorship primary deepened divisions, culminating in defections and the APC’s eventual loss to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Benue State remains split between factions loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and supporters of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, prompting a parallel reconciliation effort led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen.
Similar fault lines have emerged in Delta, Edo, Enugu, Rivers, Sokoto and Zamfara states, largely driven by governorship defections, leadership restructuring, allegations of marginalisation and disputes over party registration and control. In some cases, aggrieved members warn that unresolved grievances could undermine the APC’s chances in 2027.
Beyond state-level crises, the party is also managing the political consequences of mass defections by opposition lawmakers to the APC, which have strengthened its numerical dominance in the National Assembly but intensified internal competition and suspicion.
Political observers say the success of the Buni-led committee will depend on its ability to reconcile entrenched factions, reintegrate inactive party elders and balance the interests of old and new members.
Party insiders have urged the panel to engage former leaders and presidential aspirants who remain within the APC but have retreated from active participation.
The committee has since commenced work, holding its inaugural meeting to outline engagement strategies.
Governor Buni has reportedly cautioned members against allowing personal interests to override the broader objective of party unity, stressing that inclusive dialogue and proactive conflict management will guide the panel’s approach.
