Cameroon’s constitutional court has rejected an attempt to prevent President Paul Biya from contesting in the upcoming October 12 election, clearing the way for the 92-year-old leader to seek an eighth term.

The case was filed by Mr Akere Muna of the Universe Party, one of 12 candidates in the race, who questioned Biya’s competence to govern given his advanced age.

Court president Mr Clement Atangana dismissed the petition “on substance, as it is not justified” after two hours of arguments and deliberations behind closed doors.

Mr Muna, a lawyer and anti-corruption advocate, said he accepted the ruling but maintained that questions remained over Biya’s ability to lead effectively. He insisted that the president’s reliance on close aides and his wife highlighted his incapacity.

Rights groups have accused Biya’s administration of muzzling opposition voices as the country’s fragmented opposition struggles to mount a strong challenge against his decades-long rule.

The October vote will determine whether Biya, the world’s oldest sitting president after nearly 43 years in power, extends his controversial grip on Cameroon.
