Mexican professional boxer Canelo Alvarez has clarified why he apologized to Lionel Messi following the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Alvarez initially clashed with Messi on social media, accusing the Inter Miami captain of disrespecting the Mexican national flag after Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Mexico.
However, he later expressed regret for his comments and apologized to Messi, who was seen kicking a Mexico jersey in the dressing room after the match.

Speaking to Univision Fresno (via Express), Alvarez elaborated on his decision to apologize, acknowledging his mistake:
“You have to admit when you’re wrong. It doesn’t define you. You have to own up to your errors. The emotions of supporting the Mexican team in that moment, witnessing their loss… Well, sometimes actions are impulsive. But it’s important to recognize when you’ve crossed a line.”
