Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticized England’s star players for their performance at Euro 2024, claiming they “didn’t turn up.”
Carragher expressed his views on X following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final on Sunday. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the decisive goal for Spain after Cole Palmer had equalized Nico Williams’ second-half strike.
In the aftermath of the loss, some fans called for Gareth Southgate to step down as England manager. However, Carragher defended Southgate, arguing that the blame shouldn’t always fall on the manager.

He wrote, “Sven played 4-4-2, Fabio was too strict, Gareth is too defensive! Funny how it’s always on the manager, isn’t it?!! The fact is our big players didn’t turn up in this tournament. And in other tournaments going back years.”
