The Catholic Conference of New York State voiced disapproval, calling the image disrespectful.
The incident occurred ahead of the cardinals’ gathering to elect a new Pope.
The Catholic Conference of New York State has issued a statement criticizing Donald Trump for sharing an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope. “There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President.
“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us,” the statement reads partly.
Trump, who is not a Catholic, posted the image on his Truth Social platform ahead of the cardinals’ gathering to choose a new leader of the 1.4-billion-strong Catholic Church.

The image shows Trump seated in white papal vestments and headdress, with his right forefinger raised.
The move drew instant outrage, with some critics calling it a “blatant insult to Catholics and a mockery of their faith.”
Trump’s actions were also criticised by Republicans against Trump, a group of pro-democracy conservative Republicans fighting against Trump and Trumpism.
