The Catholic Diocese of Gboko, Benue State has suspended one of its priests, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, for joining the governorship race in the state.

Daily Report Nigeria had reported how Alia picked the N50m governorship form of the All Progressives Congress in a bid to succeed Governor Samuel Ortom in 2023.

He had already been cleared alongside 11 other aspirants by the party to participate in governorship primary election of the APC.

However, in a letter on Saturday, May 20, 2022 by the Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Gboko, William Avenya, Alia was suspended from public ministry “after series of admonitions” to him.

Bishop Avenya said that “the Mother Church does not allow her clerics to get involved in partisan politics on their own”.
