The Imo state police force has confirmed the arrest of a Catholic priest, identified as Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya for allegedly murdering a teenage boy.

According to reports, the deceased, alongside other young boys were playing with knockout in the church premise, it was gathered that he even threw a knockout into the church.

This made the priest bring out a gun, with the aim of dispersing the boys.

The incident happened during the New Year Mass held on January 1, 2025, at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.

 

Confirming the incident, a resident said the priest had fired some shots in the air with the aim of dispersing the boys, and when he paised to check his gun, he mistakenly fired a shot, which hit and claimed the life of the boy.

The gun hooked up and while trying to check the firearm, it accidentally discharged and hit one of the boys,” the resident claimed

Also confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the police command, Henry Okoye said the priest has been arrested, and an investigation has been launched into the case.

“We have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident. Further development on the case will be communicated in due course, please,” the PPRO stated.
