Champions League Shake-Up: Format, Fixtures for 2024/25 Season

The draw for the league phase of the revamped Champions League has been completed, marking the start of a new era for the Champions League. This year, 36 teams will participate, an increase from the usual 32, and the tournament will adopt a ‘Swiss-style’ league format instead of the traditional group stage.

Under this new Champions League format, each team will play a minimum of eight matches against different opponents, four at home and four away. The league phase will conclude at the end of January, later than the usual December finish. The top eight teams will automatically advance to the knockout stages, while the teams ranked from ninth to 24th will enter a two-legged play-off for a place in the last 16. Teams finishing in the 25th to 36th spots will be eliminated from all competitions.

Here are some of the key fixtures for the Champions League phase:

Key Fixtures for Champions League 2024/25 Season

Manchester City will face Inter, Club Brugge, Feyenoord, and Sparta Prague at home. They will play PSG, Juventus, Sporting Lisbon, and Bratislava away.

Inter Milan will play Leipzig (home), Manchester City (away), Arsenal (home), Leverkusen (away), Red Star (home), Young Boys (away), Monaco (home), and Sparta Praha (away).

Bayern Munich will take on PSG (home), Barcelona (away), Benfica (home), Shakhtar (away), Dinamo (home), Feyenoord (away), Slovan Bratislava (home), and Aston Villa (away).

RB Leipzig is set to face Inter (away), Liverpool (home), Juventus (home), Atletico Madrid (away), Sporting Lisbon (home), Celtic (away), Aston Villa (home), and Sturm Graz (away).

Borussia Dortmund has matches against Barcelona (home), Real Madrid (away), Shakhtar (home), Brugge (away), Celtic (home), Dinamo Zagreb (away), Sturm Graz (home), and Bologna (away).

Barcelona will play Bayern Munich (home), Dortmund (away), Atalanta (home), Benfica (away), Young Boys (home), Red Star (away), Brest (home), and Monaco (away).

Real Madrid will compete against Dortmund (home), Liverpool (away), Milan (home), Atalanta (away), Salzburg (home), Lille (away), Stuttgart (home), and Brest (away).

Liverpool will face Real Madrid (home), Leipzig (away), Milan (away), Leverkusen (home), Lille (home), PSV (away), Bologna (home), and Girona (away).

PSG will play Manchester City (home), Bayern (away), Atletico Madrid (home), Arsenal (away), PSV (home), Salzburg (away), Girona (home), and Stuttgart (away).

Atletico Madrid will have fixtures against Leipzig (home), PSG (away), Leverkusen (home), Benfica (away), Lille (home), Salzburg (away), Bratislava (home), and Sparta Praha (away).

This new format promises to bring more excitement and competitive matches as teams vie for the prestigious Champions League trophy.
