Charly Boy Reacts to Renaming of National Theatre After Soyinka

Renowned singer and social activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has publicly expressed his disappointment and withdrawal of respect for Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka.

Charly Boy, a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu, voiced his sentiments on Friday following the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, in honor of Soyinka.

The decision to rename the iconic venue was announced by President Tinubu in a tribute commemorating Soyinka’s 90th birthday. In reaction to this development, Charly Boy took to his platform to protest what he perceives as a decline in Soyinka’s integrity.

In his statement, Charly Boy remarked, “Uncle WOLE I henceforth withdraw all the respect I once had for you.” He went on to recall past discussions about Soyinka, mentioning, “When late Jimmyjohnson talked about you in the 90s, I thought he was only yabbing you.”

 

Expressing his disillusionment, Charly Boy criticized the decision, implying a loss of admiration for Soyinka, stating, “Wow! How some of our MIGHTYs have fallen, for beans, ewa, dodo, is it for rice’?”
