The Chief Warrior of Asaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah, collapsed and died during the 70th birthday celebration of the Asagba of Asaba, a shocking incident that disrupted the royal ceremony and left the community in deep sorrow.

Eyewitnesses said Oduah suddenly slumped at the reception held in honour of the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Obi Epiphany Azinge, SAN. The unexpected collapse caused panic among guests and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the monarch’s milestone.

According to a witness, efforts were made to rush him to a nearby hospital, but doctors confirmed him dead shortly after arrival. His death has thrown the city into mourning, with many describing the incident as a heartbreaking turn of events on what was meant to be a day of gratitude and celebration.

At the earlier thanksgiving Mass at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had praised the monarch’s reign, describing it as one marked by peace, humility, and wisdom. He said celebrating the Asagba at age 70 was a testimony of divine grace and a life lived with purpose and dignity.

The governor quoted Proverbs 16:31, calling the monarch’s gray hair “a crown of glory earned through righteousness,” while praying for more years of strength and wisdom for the traditional ruler.

During his homily, Cardinal John Onaiyekan reflected on Psalm 90, remarking that turning 70 is a moment for gratitude, reflection, and renewed faith. He described the Asagba as a leader whose compassion and integrity had enriched both the church and the community.

The tragic death of the Chief Warrior has since overshadowed the celebrations, leaving many residents and palace supporters seeking answers as details remain sketchy.
