A Congolese court has sentenced Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, president of the country’s football federation, to life imprisonment over the diversion of $1.3 million in development funds.

Mayolas was convicted alongside his wife, son and two other officials on charges bordering on money laundering, embezzlement and forgery.

The case centred on funds provided by FIFA for football development in Congo, which prosecutors said were misappropriated for personal use.

The ruling marks one of the most severe punishments handed to a football administrator in recent times, underscoring growing global scrutiny over the management of football development funds.

Authorities said the diverted funds were originally earmarked for grassroots and infrastructural development within the country’s football system, but were instead siphoned through fraudulent schemes.
