NYSC assures corps members of N77,000 allowance starting from March.

The DG of the scheme reveals that NYSC is committed to the welfare of corps members.

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has assured corps members that the implementation of N77,000 allowance promised by the Federal government will take effect starting from March.

This was made known during an interactive session with corps members at the Wuse and Garki NYSC Zonal Offices in Abuja on Thursday.

The DG started that the scheme is committed to ensuring the welfare of corps members, and assured the government’s commitment to fulfil their words.

He also went further to appreciate the patience shown by corps members during the transition period and encouraged them to remain committed to their duties.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, made available to the press, the scheme stated that with effect from March, all corp members will received the agreed N77,000 instead of N33,000.

The statement says, “With effect from March, you are going to receive the sum of Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira as your monthly allowance. NYSC is good at record-keeping and l can assure you that your money will be paid. The Nation and the Scheme appreciate you.”

Recall that the approval for the allowance increase was initially granted in September 2024, when the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission issued a letter on September 2024, approving the increment of corps members’ monthly allowances from N33,000 to N77,000, with an expected implementation date in February 2025.

However, there have been administrative delays as corps members continued to receive the old stipend of ₦33,000. This led to concerns and calls for clarification from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The Federal Government also stated that it allocated N430.7 billion to the NYSC in the 2025 budget, with N72.9 billion earmarked specifically for corps members’ allowances to accommodate the increment but nothing has been towards implementing the increase.

With the DG’s assurance, corps members are to be expectant that March allowance will come in the rightful amount of N77,000.

Although, there have been mixed reactions towards this announcement by the DG as some persons have lost faith in the government to keep to their promises, however, from the national concerns raised by the viral corps member Raye who called out the government over the pitiable state of surviving as a corps member, there are possible chances that the government might fulfil their promises this time around.
