The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, has affirmed Julius Abure as the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

In doing so, the court set aside the decision of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, which had restrained Abure and two others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Hamma Barka on Wednesday, the Appellate Court held that the High Court was wrong to have assumed jurisdiction over the matter.

As part of its ruling, the Appellate Court also awarded a cost of N1m in favor of Abure and against the respondent, Lamidi Apapa

Previously in 2023, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court had granted an ex-parte order, directing Abure and two other national officers to cease parading themselves as party leaders due to alleged forgery of national documents. However, the Appellate Court overturned this verdict.

The prolonged legal conflict between Abure and Apapa intensified after the 2023 presidential poll, where LP’s Peter Obi secured third place.

On March 21, 2024, Abure faced arrest in Benin City, Edo State. Viral videos captured him being manhandled by policemen while LP supporters rallied to prevent his apprehension.

The police cited charges of attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and related offenses.

Abure was subsequently released on bail the following day following protests by LP members.
