Court Extends Detention Order on Abba Kyari

Abba Kyari

Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday extended the detention of Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari by 14 days.

The court granted the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) permission to detain Kyari for a period of time to allow the agency to complete its investigation into the hard drug trafficking allegations against him.

Justice Zainab Abubakar issued the order for Kyari’s continued detention while hearing an ex-parte application argued by NDLEA counsel, Mr. Mike Kassa.

The NDLEA had requested more time to detain Kyari in the application, claiming that the hard drug trafficking allegations against the suspect were complex and would necessitate the agency traveling outside of the country.

The counsel requested that the court grant the detention extension in the interest of justice and to be fair to the suspect by conducting a thorough investigation.

Justice Abubakar issued a brief ruling in which he ordered Abba Kyari to be detained for another 14 days.

The judge, however, ordered that the 14 days of additional detention begin on February 22.
