Court Orders Kano Govt to Pay N30bn Compensation to Owners of Demolished Shops

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has ordered the Kano State Government to pay N30 billion as compensation to the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners for the illegal demolition of their properties at Kofar Mata Eid praying ground in Kano city.

The suit was filed by the Incorporated Trustee of Masallacin Idi Shop owners, Traders Association, and 56 others.

The plaintiffs through their lawyer, Dr. Nuradeen Ayagi prayed for the court to declare that action of the State government illegal, and demand damages for the illegal and unconstitutional action.

In his Judgement, Justice Simon Amobeda found eleven defendants guilty of forceful possession and demolition of plaintiffs’ properties without due process of the law.

Their names were: The Kano State Government, Kano State Urban Development Authority, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Nigerian Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Zone 1, Commissioner of Police, Kano, Nigeria Security and Civil Defend Corp NSCDC, and NSCDC Kano Commandant.

The court subsequently ruled that the Kano State Government, Kano State Urban Development Authority, and Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice must pay N10 billion as general damage cost and an additional N20 billion as exemplary and punitive damages to the plaintiffs.
