Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been summoned to appear before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on November 14, 2024, over allegations of criminal breach of trust and possession of unlawfully acquired property.

The summons, issued by Justice Maryann E. Anenih, cites offenses purportedly committed between 2016 and 2023.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed the summons on social media, indicating that Bello is accused of violating Section 311 of the Penal Code, which addresses criminal breach of trust, and Section 319A, concerning possession of suspected illegally obtained property.

The court documents state: “A complaint has been made on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that you, Yahaya Adoza Bello, sometimes within the year 2016 up until 2023… did commit offences to wit: criminal breach of trust and having possession or control of property reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.”

This latest development adds to the growing legal troubles facing Bello, who was previously declared wanted by the EFCC.

He faces a new set of charges involving an alleged fraud of N110 billion, following earlier accusations related to money laundering totaling over N80 billion.

The EFCC had previously attempted to arrest Bello, but the effort was unsuccessful.

In a notable visit to the EFCC headquarters last month, he was accompanied by Kogi State’s current Governor, Usman Ododo, but did not face questioning. EFCC officials have criticized the visit as a publicity stunt rather than a genuine compliance with legal obligations.
