Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Wife, Beatrice

Nigeria’s former deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice are set to be sentenced on Friday by a British court.

To be sentenced alongside the couple is an associate Obinna Obeta after the trio was found guilty of organ trafficking.

The organ trafficking case instituted against the suspects began last year after a young man identified as David Nwamini accused the couple of attempts to harvest his organs.

David reported himself to the Metropolitan police alleging that he was brought over to the UK by the Ekweremadu’s to be used as a kidney donor for their sick daughter, Sonia.

He also claimed that he was abandoned by the couple after tests revealed his organ was not a match for their ailing daughter.

The Ekweremadu’s and their associate were subsequently arrested and have been on trial, though they all pleaded not guilty.

After six weeks of trial in April, the court convicted the suspects of the offences.
