According to Reuters sources, the refinery has been struggling with operational issues, particularly with its crude distillation unit (CDU).

Despite claims of functional operations, the refinery has been importing several crude cargoes monthly, with over 16 million barrels of West Texas Intermediate crude purchased in 2024 alone.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission recently agreed with oil producers to supply crude oil to domestic refineries at market prices, ending a lengthy supply dispute.
