Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, demanding the annulment of import licenses granted to several companies, including the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and Matrix Petroleum Services Limited.

The refinery claims these licenses undermine its ability to operate effectively, despite its capacity to produce refined petroleum products that meet local demand.

In the suit, numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/1324/2024, Dangote Refinery contends that the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has continued to authorize imports of products such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Jet Fuel, even though Dangote’s production exceeds Nigeria’s current daily consumption levels.

“The issuance of these import licenses is not only redundant but detrimental to fair competition in the industry.

“We are producing sufficient quantities of AGO and Jet-A1, and it is in the interest of the Nigerian economy to support local production,” said a spokesperson for Dangote Refinery

The company is also seeking N100 billion in damages from the NMDPRA, arguing that the continuation of these licenses is unlawful and poses a threat to its operations.

Joining the NMDPRA in the lawsuit are Aym Shafa Limited, A. A. Rano Limited, T. Time Petroleum Limited, 2015 Petroleum Limited, and Matrix Petroleum Services Limited.
