The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has sounded the alarm over the escalating electricity costs crippling university operations nationwide, urging the Federal Government to intervene promptly.

Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU’s National President, emphasized the urgent need for a stable power supply to facilitate critical university functions, including administration, teaching, research, and community service.

Ibrahim’s concerns are well-founded, as the absence of adequate power infrastructure has severely disrupted university operations, impacting students – the primary stakeholders – directly.

“We urge the federal government to take immediate action to resolve this energy crisis, as it directly impacts students,” Ibrahim stated.

The SSANU National President’s call to action echoes the sentiments of other university administrators, who have also expressed concerns over the soaring electricity costs.

The electricity crisis has far-reaching implications, affecting not only universities but also households, healthcare facilities, small businesses, and larger industries.

In 2024, DisCos increased the cost of single-phase meters from N81,975 to approximately N125,000, worsening the financial burdens on these sectors.

The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, for instance, reported spending around N80 million monthly on electricity bills, straining its limited resources.
