Davido Explains Personal Ties to Edo State Amid Outcry Over Governorship Election

Davido

Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has clarified his interest in the ongoing Edo State governorship election. On Saturday, the state’s residents came out in large numbers to vote in the off-cycle gubernatorial election.

Davido has been vocal on X, calling out the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged irregularities in the voting process. This prompted many to wonder why the singer, who is not from Edo State, is so invested in the election.

Responding to the queries on his X account, Davido explained that his late mother, Imade Veronica Adeleke, was from Edo State. He added that his connection to the state through his mother justifies his interest, but he also stressed that as a Nigerian, it’s essential to be concerned about the country’s electoral integrity.

He pointed out that he had similarly spoken out during the Osun State gubernatorial election when his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, was running for office.

“My mom is from Edo for those wondering why I’m interested in the election… but we as Nigerians should be concerned. INEC, shame on you. I know how many times I had to come in here and rant before they got it right in Osun! It’s really bad. God help us,” Davido wrote.

Earlier, the singer had endorsed PDP candidate Asuen Ighodalo for the Edo governorship race via his Instagram account.
