A devastating earthquake struck China’s remote Tibet region on Tuesday, killing at least 53 people and collapsing many buildings.
The powerful quake, which had a magnitude of 6.8, hit Dingri county near the border with Nepal at 9:05 am local time.
According to state media, 62 people were injured in the quake, which caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure.

Videos published by China’s state broadcaster CCTV showed houses destroyed with walls torn apart, while rescue workers waded through rubble to search for survivors.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the need for “full-scale search and rescue efforts, minimizing casualties to the greatest extent possible, properly resettling affected residents, and ensuring their safety and warmth through the winter.”
