The devastating arson attack on a mosque in Gezawa, Kano State, has claimed 21 lives, with four others still hospitalized, according to latest reports.
The attack, which occurred during morning prayers, was allegedly carried out by 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar on May 15.
Abubakar has been arraigned before an upper Shariah court and remanded in a correctional facility until May 31, 2024.

The incident has left the community in shock and grief, with residents put in deep pain and sorrow.

One said:
“It’s a heartbreaking situation. We are all in deep pain and praying for the quick recovery of those still in the hospital.”
It was said that Abubakar allegedly sprayed petrol around the mosque, locked the door, and set it on fire, trapping over 30 worshippers inside.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and the community calling for justice and support for the victims and their families.
