The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that no amount of defections real or imagined can break its unity or weaken its structure ahead of the 2025 National Convention.
Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary and Secretary of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee for the Convention, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, dismissed the speculation of mass defections as an orchestrated ploy by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the reports of alleged defections by some PDP governors are a testament to the growing national interest in the opposition party and its internal democratic processes.
“Let me say this; the stories of defection or possible defection that are catching Nigerians’ attention show that we have a political master,” Ologunagba said.
“Because of the foundation of the PDP that is strong, solid, and based on the people, we remain the only truly democratic party in this country, one built on ideas, convictions, and policies.”

Ologunagba added that the PDP’s survival through decades of turbulence including the exit of prominent leaders such as presidents and vice presidents — proved its resilience as an institution founded on democratic ideals rather than personal ambitions.
He stated that while the APC might rely on political manipulation to gain temporary advantage, the PDP’s base lies in its connection to the people, which continues to drive its relevance and legitimacy across the country.
“The attention and anxiety generated by these defection stories only reinforce that Nigerians still see the PDP as the most viable alternative to the APC. Our convention will further strengthen that trust,” he said.
The spokesman urged party members nationwide to remain steadfast, assuring them that the PDP leadership is focused on consolidating internal unity and preparing for the next general elections.
