Italy has been eliminated from Euro 2024 in Germany after losing 2-0 to Switzerland in the first Round of 16 match on Saturday.
The defending champions struggled against the Swiss, who dominated with 65% possession and eight of the first nine shots on goal. Remo Freuler scored the opener, and Ruben Vargas quickly doubled the lead just 27 seconds into the second half following a turnover by Italy.
Switzerland will now advance to face either England or Slovakia in the quarter-final next weekend in Dusseldorf.
Italy becomes the third team in the last three European Championships to be knocked out in the round of 16 after winning the previous tournament.
