The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Western Zone, has lamemted the high level of underdevelopment Ijaws are faced with in Delta State.

The IYC said this in a statement released on Tuesday by the body in reaction to the 33rd creation anniversary of the state.

The statements signed by Nicholas Igarama (Chairman), Ebi Joshua Olowolayemo Esq (Secretary) and Tare Magbei (Information Officer) described Ijaws as ‘forsaken’ and ‘left behind’ in the developmental agenda of Delta State.

The group further charged the Sheriff Oborevwori led Delta State Government to right the wrongs of his predecessors.

The statements reads;

“As Delta State marks its 33rd anniversary, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Western Zone takes this moment to reflect on the journey so far, especially from the perspective of the Ijaw people.

“While we acknowledge the progress made in various sectors across the state, it is with a heavy heart that we must express our disappointment and concern over the continued marginalization of the Ijaw communities within Delta State.

“For three decades, the Ijaw people have been integral to the development and sustenance of Delta State, contributing significantly to the state’s economy, particularly through the oil and gas sector.

“Despite our sacrifices and contributions, the Ijaw communities remain largely underdeveloped and neglected. We lack basic infrastructure, adequate educational facilities, and sufficient healthcare services.

“The neglect of the Ijaw people is not just a failure of governance but a profound injustice that must be corrected.

“Our youths face limited opportunities, and our lands are still plagued by environmental degradation due to oil exploration activities.

“It is disheartening that even after 33 years, the Ijaw people are yet to fully enjoy the dividends of democracy and development that Delta State prides itself on.

“We call on the state government to take immediate and tangible steps to address the glaring inequalities that have left the Ijaw people behind. It is time to ensure that development reaches every corner of Delta State, including the Ijaw communities.

“His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, should take decisive action in undoing this historical disenfranchisement. We urge the Governor to change the narrative for the Ijaw people by prioritizing our development and ensuring that the benefits of statehood reach every Ijaw community.

“The Ijaw people deserve to be active participants in the Delta State project, not just in name but in reality.this requires a focused effort to address the infrastructure deficit, improve access to education and healthcare, and create economic opportunities for Ijaw youths.”
