The defection transforms the Delta State House of Assembly into a one-party legislature, with the remaining seven members originally elected on the APC ticket.
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, has announced the defection of himself and 21 other PDP lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move effectively transforms the Assembly into a one-party legislature, with only APC members represented.
According to Guwor, the decision to defect was made after extensive consultations with constituents and political leaders across the state. “The mass defection of members of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress was made in the overall interest of Deltans and the state,” Guwor stated.
The Speaker emphasized that the move aligns with Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and is driven by the desire to partner with the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. “We are fully committed to partnering with the Federal Government to deliver greater development to Deltans,” Guwor said.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, reiterated that the defection was prompted by the crisis within the PDP, citing instability at the national level and factionalization at the South-South level.
“Our decision was based on the instability at the national level and the factionalization at the South-South level. Consequently, we chose to move to the ruling All Progressives Congress, in accordance with Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended,” Nwaobi explained.
