The Seriki of Arewa Community in Asaba, Delta State, Alhaji Ibrahim Babagero, has summoned a meeting for the setting up of a herder/farmer committee in the 25 local government councils of the State.

According to him, the committee would be a mediator between farmers and herdsman to put an end the reoccuring violence.

He stated this while speaking with reporters in Asaba.

Alhaji Babagero said that such committee must be chaired by the Council chairman, and other credible persons from both sides to achieve the desired peace in the land, maintaining that the committee will go to predominantly farming rural areas to mediate between farmers and Fulani herdsmen.

He stated that the committee must liaise with the traditional rulers in such communities, the security agencies, farmers and herdsmen to ensure peace, love and orderliness.

Advising that when such committees are set up any, Fulani herdsman whose cattle destroys crops should be made to pay for such crops and farmers should do same but should henceforth refrain from killing cows belonging to Fulani pastoralists.

He mentioned that the two parties are bound to embrace the needed peace when the committee is inaugurated.

He further described Deltans as “very nice, accommodating and friendly people” saying, there is no regret living in the State.
