Delta Ijaw Students Holds Maiden Convention, Elects New Leadership

The National Association of Delta Ijaw Students, NADIS, on Saturday, November 20, 2021, held its maiden convention in Okerenkoko, Warri South West Local Government Area, Delta State.

President of NADIS, Comrade Collins Oturubo in his welcome address, highlighted the challenges the association has faced since its institution in 2008 and expressed gratitude to God for the achievements of his administration.

The event was chaired by Comr Jerry Ehiwario, Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Government, witnessed a convergence of students cutting across the six LGAs with Ijaw presence.

Comrade Jerry in his welcome address expressed hope for education in the creeks while promising that the state government will do all it can to partner with student associations like NADIS to further increase performance.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESTU), spearheaded various other student bodies present at the ceremony, as well as the Delta Ijaw Comrade Community, DICC.

The convention-themed “Student Activism and Leadership, the Epicenter For Credible Leadership,” had a keynote lecture presented by Dr. Paul Bebenimibo, Commissioner representing Ijaw ethnic nationality on the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Commission, DESOPADEC.

Bebenimibo, who holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication charged on participants to take advantage of their intellectual levels to engage the government in seeking for credible leadership.

Also, Mrs. Nwachukwu Bekenawei Endurance presented a lecture on the need for women to get actively involved in unionism and politics.

The experienced student activist charged female students to take advantage of unionism, as it will prepare them for future leadership roles.

Also, President of the Delta Ijaw Comrade Community, Amb Prince will Binebai, represented by the Secretary, Tare Magbei, urged students to participant in the mainstream electioneering process.

Comrade Magbei stressed that while unionism is a brooding ground for future leaders, students should ensure that they are registered and eligible voters to enable them to vote in leaders of their choices, which is a civic responsibility.

The highlight of the event was the election of a new set of executives led by Comrade Festus Ayigo to pilot the affairs of the association.
