Dino Melaye Secures Final Legal Victory Against FG After Six-Year Ordeal | Daily Report Nigeria

Former Senator Dino Melaye has emerged victorious in a significant legal battle, with the FCT High Court acquitting him of all charges related to an alleged assassination attempt.

This ruling marks the conclusion of a six-year saga involving twelve cases brought against him by the Federal Government.

Justice Sylvanus Oriji delivered the landmark verdict in Maitama, exonerating Melaye from accusations that he provided false information concerning an assassination attempt on his life in 2017. The legal proceedings commenced in February 2018 when Melaye was accused of implicating Edward Onoja, then Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in the purported plot.

Following the verdict, Melaye took to the social media platform X, expressing gratitude towards his legal team and reaffirming his faith in divine justice. “I take life as it comes, but in all the vicissitudes of life, I trust in God only. He is always with the just,” he wrote. He also proclaimed, “Justice served after six years. Justice delayed is never justice denied. God alone be praised. SEN. DINO MELAYE 12 – FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND IGP 0. 12 CASES ALL WON BY GOD.”

The initial case faced numerous delays, notably due to the tragic passing of Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu during a crossover service on December 31, 2017. The Attorney General’s Office formally charged Melaye on January 31, 2018, claiming his allegations were unfounded, linked to an investigation into the alleged assassination attempt in his hometown of Ayetoro-Gbede, Kogi State. Melaye pleaded not guilty to the charges on March 1, 2018.

In the years that followed, Melaye repeatedly alleged threats to his life, including accusations against the Kogi State police in July 2018 and claims of a conspiracy against him by state authorities in March 2019, which were vehemently denied by the Kogi government.

As Melaye celebrates his acquittal, the implications of this ruling may resonate throughout the political landscape, raising questions about the integrity of the charges he faced and the motivations behind them.
