The Spurs right-back called the chance to become the first male player publicly identifying as Muslim to represent England “a blessing”.
Faith drives Spence’s life. “First things first, God is the greatest. I pray a lot and give gratitude to God,” – he said, adding that his faith helped him through dark times.
Spence built his career step by step. He impressed in the Championship with Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, then joined Tottenham in 2022.
He struggled for minutes under Antonio Conte and went out on several loans before he forced his way into the side last season.
He made his full Spurs debut in December and came on as a substitute in the Europa League final in Bilbao.
He credits mindset for the turnaround:
“Without a strong mentality you won’t make it,” Spence added. “I’ve had people doubt me, and it feels good to prove them wrong.”
He wants to inspire others.
“If I can do it, you can do it — not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it.”
The possible milestone would matter for representation in English football.
England host Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday before travelling to Serbia in Belgrade; Tuchel’s side top Group K with three wins from three.
Spence’s England debut remains the key story to watch this weekend.
