Mavin Records CEO, Don Jazzy has opened up about the Afrobeats music that shaped him and influenced the global rise of the genre, spotlighting tracks and albums he considers “pillars of the sound.”

In an exclusive interview with RollingStone Africa, the award-winning producer paid respect to the early years of Afrobeats, especially the memorable Mo’ Hits era he built alongside D’Banj. Don Jazzy said some records were not just hits, they were cultural turning points.

He described 2Baba’s African Queen as “the song that opened doors for the entire genre,” noting how its emotional storytelling introduced Afrobeats to international audiences. He also praised Wizkid’s Ojuelegba, saying its authenticity and raw truth made the world pay attention to the everyday Nigerian experience.

D’Banj’s Fall in Love also made his list. Don Jazzy recalled how the song became “a continental anthem” at a time when Afrobeats was still fighting for recognition. He equally celebrated 9ice’s Gongo Aso, commending its perfect blend of Yoruba culture and mainstream pop.

When it came to albums, the producer did not hesitate, Wande Coal’s Mushin 2 Mo’Hits took the top spot. Don Jazzy called it a “masterpiece that defined modern Afrobeats,” reminding fans that he produced the entire project from scratch.

He also listed other albums he considers foundational to the success of Afrobeats today:

2Baba’s Grass 2 Grace, Wizkid’s Superstar, D’Banj’s The Entertainer, and Aṣa’s debut album all works he believes shaped the sonic evolution of Africa’s biggest export.

According to Don Jazzy, these projects set the standard for the Afrobeats sound that the world now celebrates.
