He played 17 times and scored once during his loan, and, despite recurring injury issues, he showed enough quality for Dortmund to act decisively.

“I’m happy Borussia Dortmund is now my footballing home. I will give everything to make sure we achieve our goals as a team,” – Chukwuemeka said.

Born in Austria and raised in England, he rose through Aston Villa’s academy before joining Chelsea in 2022.

Dortmund expect his technical skill, close control and forward runs to add much-needed creativity in the final third.

Dortmund sign Carney Chukwuemeka: €25m move

Sporting director Lars Ricken said the signing “increases the quality and creativity of our attacking midfield.”

The club strengthened further this summer by signing Jobe Bellingham and Yan Couto, and by extending coach Niko Kovač’s contract to 2027.

German paper Bild reports Dortmund could still add Aaron Anselmino and Fabio Silva before the deadline.

Meanwhile, links to Jadon Sancho persist.

For the long term, Dortmund view Chukwuemeka as a player who can develop with regular minutes.

Because he showed flashes on loan, the club will manage his workload and integrate him into the attacking midfield rotation rather than rush him into every start.

In other moves, Chelsea are reportedly weighing a £43m bid for Barcelona’s Fermin López as clubs across Europe finalise squads before the transfer deadline.
