The DSS arrest of a suspect linked to the attack on Peter Obi has brought fresh developments to the shocking shooting incident that occurred during a political meeting in Benin, Edo State.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Udeme Sunday Stephen over his alleged connection to the recent armed attack on Peter Obi in Benin, the capital of Edo State.

According to reports by Channels Television, the suspect was apprehended following what security operatives described as a detailed investigation into the incident.

Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, narrowly escaped harm on February 24 when gunmen opened fire during a political gathering in Benin. Also present at the meeting was former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun, alongside several leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The attack sent shockwaves through political circles, raising fresh concerns about safety at campaign and opposition gatherings.

Investigators reportedly traced social media posts made shortly after the attack to the suspect. The man, identified online as @stevetom788, allegedly claimed responsibility and issued further threats against Obi.

In one of the posts, he reportedly suggested that the former Anambra governor was “lucky” to have survived the Benin attack and warned that he might not escape next time.

Security analysts say such public declarations may have played a key role in aiding investigators.

A counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, later disclosed that the suspect had been taken into custody.

The attack on Peter Obi in Benin has heightened fears over political violence as opposition figures continue engagements across the country. Security agencies have yet to release full details of the suspect’s alleged role or whether additional arrests are expected.
