The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region in response to a series of coups and attempted mutinies in member countries.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Touray said the recent developments highlight the urgent need for member states to conduct serious introspection on the future of democracy in the region, and to prioritize investment in regional security.

The state of emergency comes as West Africa faces increasing political instability, with member nations grappling with leadership disruptions and military interventions.
