Edo Election: Obaseki Failed Ijaws as Governor - IYC

As pressure mounts towards the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Western Zone has labelled the outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki a failure.

The IYC Western Zone Chairman, Nicholas Igarama, described Oaseki as a man who did not keep to his promises and deliberately neglected the developmental needs of the ijaw people in Edo state.

Igarama said this while addressiny newsmen on friday, stating that Ijaws have been neglected over and over gain in Edo, in areas of development and proper political recognition despite the pivotal roles the Ijaws played to enthrone the Obaseki government.

“The Ijaw territory, which accounts for the state’s oil revenue and plays a major role of contributing to the federal allocation in Edo State, is perpetually relegated to second fiddle to other areas.

“We are very much aware that our development has been politicized by the Governor Obaseki led administration, and we will not fold our hands to truth,” Igarama said.

“The Ijaws in Edo are suffering like slaves in our own state with the Oba of Benin, leading the conspiracy to the extent of refusing to give staff of office to our most revered royal fathers.

“Thus, ijaws are advised not to cast their votes for political jobbers and those who are being teleguided by the Oba of Benin.

“Let’s (Ijaws) support and enthrone a new leadership (governor) that will have the political will peioritize the welfare and development of our people and areas.”

Igarama noted that a governor with the magnanimity of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is “fast-tracking development in Ijaw areas across the Niger Delta is what Edo needs.”

The Chairman urged the people to cast their votes peacefully and defend their territories “to ensure an Ijaw friendly governor is voted into power for the betterment of our people.”
